Description
An old study on a Communist Spain I've resurrected and expanded. Largo Caballero manages a more prominent position of power as he adopts a less open display of his true intentions and avoids public implication with the 1934 revolution, and becomes president of the government of the Republic when the Popular Front wins the 1936 elections. The discovery of a plotted coup d'etat by elements of the army unleashes a bloody purge, not just of the military and of the reactionary elements and the Anarchists, but of the very Popular Front, as Largo Caballero assumes extraordinary powers. The Liberal Democratic elements and the Moderate faction of the PSOE vanish in the subsequent years, and when WWII starts, Largo Caballero manages to merge the surviving factions into the Socialist Revolutionary Unification of Spain. The 1940 constitution gives birth to the Third Spanish Republic, a Marxist-Leninist state, with the Popular Front, Proletarian Internationalist symbol becoming a symbol of the Spanish Revolution. Even if Spain became an Allied country, a Pyrenaic equivalent to the Maginot line, built during the army reforms of the late 30's, avoided the invasion of the Peninsula during WWII.
